When Robin Williams committed suicide, the autopsy found massive decay, lewy body dementia. They were surprised he could even still walk!! My inability to just even sometimes make it through a day of doing *nothing* scares me. I am 51, I *want* it to get better...I don't do or threaten self-injury because I am GOING to get what I want. It's just certain drugs are not on my insurance formulary, and I can't afford to pay for them out-of-pocket. (I am in Canada...no public pharmacare).
What brain antioxidant is the most powerful and best??

Possibly Glutathione followed by VItamin E. I am having GSH checked soon. If it is low I am going to take S-Acetyl-GLutatione

I am concerned, yeah. Neuroleptics don't help with that!

Thats what I am talking about. Dementia, Tardive Dyskinesia. If you get either one, would you still consider the meds that helpful, even if they are "effective"?

Well, I DO have a slight amount of TD. My left hand shakes quite badly, when put under a bit of strain, sometimes. Other times, I just notice is mildly.
I think maybe when I took Prozac, it contributed to it, as well as when I was on Risperdal. But I have been on every typical antipsychotic, and a few typicals (for brief periods of time) since.
Knock on wood, TD hasn't been much of a problem. How about you, Lamdage22?

I guess I am concerned more with my benzo use. (Which is only occasionally)..but I have to take higher doses than prescribed, because over 30 years, I have developed tolerance. Rxlist.com suggests that doses as high as 4mg a day may be needed. I am prescribed 3mg a day, and will save them up to take 6mg in one shot, along with Inderal, if I am having a rough day. This IS NOT abuse..I don't take them for recreational purposes, but as part of my BP2/GAD diagnosis.
But, since greatly reducing my Effexor/antidepressant use, my memory has much improved. I think AD's are much more detrimental to good cognitive functioning. As a BP2'er, ad's, at high doses, even medium, impair my memory, cognition, and temperament. Combined with ad's, benzos greatly impair my memory. Lower my ad, and I better tolerate benzos. I think there may be a secret to very low dose ad's. I remember a time when I was on imipramine, at 10-20mg's and I did great! But, the doctor kept pushing for higher doses.
Anyhow, I am a bit afraid to take those tests for either Lewis Body or Alzheimer's disease/dementia.

Very low dose Lithium (like microcodes that maybe should naturally exist in water) have been shown to help prevent cognitive decline.

But yea, I'm a little concerned when it comes to mind.

Petermartin's suggestion about microdosing lithium is a good one.

I read a recent article that reports that neither benzodiazepines nor the Z-drugs increase one's risk for developing Alzheimer's Dementia. However, anticholinergics do.

Low-dosage lithium (300mg/day) improved my depression immediately, although not robustly, when it was added to Parnate. However, it consistently makes me feel worse at 450 mg/day or higher. For me, the dose-response curve is biphasic. It turns out that lithium's effect on glutamatergic activity also follows a biphasic curve. Low dosages increase glutamatergic activity while high dosages decrease it. Anyway, when it was unclear whether or not lithium was still having a positive effect on my mood, I elected to continue taking it regardless. The *only* reason why I continued to take lithium was because I had read about it possibly preventing Alzheimer's Dementia. I can't remember how many years I've been taking low-dosage lithium for. It has been at least 10 years.
At this point, my personal experience with lithium and at least one Harvard clinical study indicates that low dosages (300-600mg/day) are sufficient when treating unipolar depression. In fact, low dosages might actually be necessary. At 300mg/day, there are generally no side effects, and the risk of kidney or thyroid damage is negligible.
I am interested to know what other people have experienced with low-dosage lithium.

Good stuf. It helps with suicidality at 225.

I am 50 also and I have had physical symptoms of depression in the last 10 years. cognitive and motor slowing, slow halting speech etc. and yes I really worry about dementia too.
symptoms of depression can become physical and mimic demetia. I had a doctor call this 'pseudo-dementia' awhile back.
What did resolve these symptoms for me (but not the emotional issues) was TMS.
I think the lack of activity and high carbohydrate intake thats common in depressives also contributes to the physical symptoms.
This is the end of the thread.
