Low-dosage lithium (300mg/day) improved my depression immediately, although not robustly, when it was added to Parnate. However, it consistently makes me feel worse at 450 mg/day or higher. For me, the dose-response curve is biphasic. It turns out that lithium's effect on glutamatergic activity also follows a biphasic curve. Low dosages increase glutamatergic activity while high dosages decrease it. Anyway, when it was unclear whether or not lithium was still having a positive effect on my mood, I elected to continue taking it regardless. The *only* reason why I continued to take lithium was because I had read about it possibly preventing Alzheimer's Dementia. I can't remember how many years I've been taking low-dosage lithium for. It has been at least 10 years.

At this point, my personal experience with lithium and at least one Harvard clinical study indicates that low dosages (300-600mg/day) are sufficient when treating unipolar depression. In fact, low dosages might actually be necessary. At 300mg/day, there are generally no side effects, and the risk of kidney or thyroid damage is negligible.

I am interested to know what other people have experienced with low-dosage lithium.

I dream of things that never were and ask why not.
