I think that my psychotropic medications are going to be necessary for a long time, and rather than a crutch they are the means to me being able to live a more productive life. Having said that, there are many who believe that these medications don't really "fix" anything, and can do more harm than good.

For me, I look to family history to help in deciding what route to go for treatment. I personally believe that there are genetic markers and environmental factors that have contributed to my mental illness. I decided to seek treatment from a p-doc and a therapist to 1) help get the symptoms of depression under control and 2) learn what I could do to improve my situation.

I think maybe it's different for everyone... just as we are all individuals and can have varying responses to the same medications, the nature of our illness can be different as well.
