My pharmacist says only one person in our town is on Vivactil. I think it is a neglected underused antidepressant. Desipramine or Nortriptyline probably have slightly milder anticholinergic side effects though.
I saw a comment from one doctor that said Vivactil would be a whole lot more popular if Prozac hadn't been invented. It is more activating than the other TCAs. The SSRIs kind of pushed a lot of yesterday's effective antidepressants into the closet. And I've seen monograph comments indicating Vivactil is "suitable for the apathetic withdrawn depressed patient".
I tried Vivactil briefly for about a week. The only reason I stopped was because it increased my tinnitus to an intolerable level.
