There is no greater gift than mother love
A poem for AtticusYou are strong
You are alluring
I watch you shimmer
I reach my hand into the deep blue pool of my screen
I want to touch that moving image
Your eyes the color of a pale blue spring sky
I want to soothe the red spikes of hair crowning your head
I will hold you till all the stars in the sky are winking away with the crimson light of dawn
I will tell you stories about how the beast was tamed and the prince got his princess
I will tenderly pat the tears as they flow from your sweet closed eyes
I will stand by your side while you slumber
There is no greater gift than mother love

I'm sitting here shivering, my hands quaking on the keys, tears forming in my eyes as I write this, I'm so deeply moved. For once, even my Blarney Stone-blessed tongue is tied in knots. For all my linguistic pyrotechnics, I doubt anything I've written has ever made anyone feel as purely, sheerly joyful as I do right now. Electric chills are moving along my spine, my arms, my fingers. This is just so special, a moment of unforgettably transcendent beauty in what has been a brutal year. All I can offer in return is the part of my autobiographical story cycle that I've been putting off and putting off, because for me, this next poem really is about the morning after the apocalypse. Your message has renewed my determination to get it out, to share it. Thank you, Jai, thanks so much. This one's for you. Ta. :) Atticus
