I would like to know if anyone has any advise on going back to school after 20 years. My therapist has encouraged me. I am excited but very nervous.
i had a hard time when I was in college now I have 3 kids (1 special needs). I am ADD due to the bipolar and hope I can stay focused.

Take advantage of disability services, they can be helpful.
Sounds exciting!

I am trying to do this but I have gone to the dept of education FAFSA, called my Regional Center and searched the internet and have not been able to find help. Do you know where I can go? Thanks

The college you are going to, have you checked there? I know that most colleges have a disability department that vary on there levels of assistance and helpfulness. But you have to get testing done to make sure you qualify unless you have recent tests available. But you should ask them. call the main line and ask for disablilty or check it through the college online.
I hope this was helpful. are you starting this fall?

Yes I am starting on 9/12. I will definitely call and check. I did call my academic councelor but she hasn't called me back yet. I also have a psychiatrist I see regularly. I guess a letter from him isn't good enough?

Your school's disability office should have information about their requirements for qualifying for disability. If you don't have current testing to validate your diagnosis, they should be able to refer you for this. Don't wait, because if you need to be tested, it can take a few weeks.
Good luck!

Lalimom,
I have been having serious Bipolar problems over the past 3 or more years, and have been hospitalized 3 times in that time period. I also have 3 children (young ones).I decided to go back to graduate school a year ago, (to study mental health counseling!) and it is the best thing I've ever done for myself. I've had mood swings, and 2 of my hospitalizations occured this past summer, but as far as classes go -- that's the best part of my life.
The bipolar stuff has been difficult, but I've got a 4.0 average none the less, and my classes fire me up and give me more energy.
I hope the same happens to you. I just wanted to give you some encouragement -- it might make your life better rather than more difficult!!
Good luck ~~Autumn~~

Thank you for all your advice. I have started school and it is not nearly as hard as I thought it was going to be. I actually love it. Sometimes, I get overstressed but my husband has been great and very supportive. This is what makes the difference for me.
