Um, I'm already working under an extension. If I want to be hooded with my class this May, I need to defend by April. It's still doable, but I also need to see where my internship fits into this. The official start of it has been delayed until I propose. Thank Dog I have archival data. If I had to collect it, I'd be looking at another year. I may still have to wait a year if I can't graduate at the other graduation dates (August or December if I can't get done by April). I suppose I should find this out, eh?
Good luck with the grovelling. It's painful, but I have found the actual moment is not as bad as the anticipation/dread.

Yeah, I have already been given one unofficially, just need to get the paperwork and negotiate the date. I would be happy to get it extended until September myself (if I stay enrolled full time I qualify for a living allowance). That may be pushing it though. I would like to graduate (before I go touch wood), but I don't think thats feasible. Need to allow 6-8 weeks for marking and I think the ceremony is in April. I am not too bothered about graduation to tell you the truth, but it would be different if it was my doctorate. I can understand why you would like to go through with your class.
Philosophers never have to worry about running experiments and I suppose it is really up to us whether we choose to worry about data or not! (It is controversial what the relation is between philosophy and the sciences). It is just about summarising what has gone before and then saying what you reckon.
I am lucky that I don't need to defend. Unlucky, however, in that it is graded. My thesis is just filling in time really at any rate. This time last year my honours grades weren't in so I couldn't apply to the US. Needed to do something, so thesis it is. Our system (in the southern hemisphere) is a lot different. 3 year undergrad degree. One year honours (4 papers max of 1 independent research). Then you can proceed to either Masters (One year thesis), MPhil (maybe 2 years? Thesis), or PhD (3 year thesis). Thats why I want to go to the US. More coursework. Otherwise I will just have to get straight into another one.
Good luck with it all.
I can't do anything until the 5th because my swipe card access needs renewal and so I can't get into the building. Library is closed too :-)

ugh, don't you hate when your card expires? That happens to us at the end of every semester, regardless of where we are in the program. It should be fairly obvious that a person is still active if they are in the middle of their program. Why not wait til the beginning of the next semester to purge those who drop out?
Fortunately, I have a friend who works at the library, and she helps me out of these stupid adminstrative pickles.

Every semester! That is a bit harsh... Ours are yearly. Mine ran out on christmas (not that I checked christmas day, but thats when my internet access expired). If I got my butt into gear then I would have simply arranged the extension BEFORE it expired. Still, you forget every year and you get blocked every year. I think it is something of a graduate student tradition :-)
> Fortunately, I have a friend who works at the library, and she helps me out of these stupid adminstrative pickles.Oh, I was talking about building access to the department. We can't use the library except when it is open and it is closed until the 5th. Hence enforced holiday and panic stations on Wednesday...
This is the end of the thread.
