Hi everybody,
I am seeing a therapist I really like, but he is really in the DBT mode and I'm not sure I'm grasping the concepts. I feel like I don't have enough control over my thoughts, etc., to make it through the exercises. He'll tell me to "turn the mind" away from a difficult thought but I don't have that control. Maybe partly because I have lingering OCD?
Does anyone else ever feel overwhelmed by DBT?
Thank you,
Roslynn

I thought DBT didn't require that you turn your mind from a thought? Just that you observe the thought instead of being upset by it, which seems to be the opposite of trying to turn your thoughts from it?
I could be wrong, but in my mind I associate that more with CBT.
There's nothing that makes a thought stick in my mind more than trying to turn my mind from something...

If you ask him, could you let me know what he says? I'm curious about the real life application of DBT. I've just read about it.
