I know, I'm a complete dweeb. This never occurred to me before, but at breakfast this morning, I realized that they are service providers -- more the T than the pdoc -- and therefore really do fall under the "let's make you crazy with tax law" umbrella.
Anyone know the answer?

Unless you have an independent contract with them they are considered a business so no 1099 is needed. They are responsible for keeping their own records of payments and paying taxes accordingly.
but it is an interesting idea -- your therapist as an independent contractor to you...quite a shift in the power differencial.

Hi, Racer.
Sorry for the late answer, but I believe individuals don't need to issue 1099-MISC's. It's a business form used, in part, for payments over $600 made to a health provider "in the course of their trade or business".
That said, if you *are* a business, don't forget you also have to issue them for any cash payments for fish. Odd the way the IRS works, isn't it? ;)

Businesses that aren't governmental or non-profit can't forget their payments to informers of criminal activity, either.
Can you believe this stuff is part of my job? And I'm talking to myself about it here. Now who's the dweeb? ;)
This is the end of the thread.
