Why do therapists charge so much?

Posted by Angela2 on February 28, 2005, at 10:15:00

Why do therapists charge so much? Why does my insurance only cover 20 visits per year when I need to go once a week? Is it because insurance companies and the government have the same attitude as my dad? My dad believes there is nothing "wrong" with me, so I shouldn't have to go. I thinks I can just talk myself into a good mood, out of my worry, out of my problems.

Because they can...

Because they have studied for a number of years and are trying to pay that money back ;-)

Because they can...

I don't know.

It depends on the type of T.

Psychiatrists go to school for ten years, at least, are medical docs, have really good brains (we hope!) People who are specialised, like docs, are usually paid very well. You think your Pdco makes a lot fo dough? Go and see a good plastic surgeon!

AS for psychologists, they also have to have good brains, though they tend to go to school for less time, and are not medical docs.

Counselling psychologist and Social workers who do counselling do a few years of graduate school.

All fo them do a job that is very difficult. We trust them with our lives, tell them the painful stories, look to them for guidance, ask a lot of them. We ask them to care about us. It's a huge responsibility.

And they have to rent and furnish an office, keep an answering service and a cell phone, some keep receptionists, all of that is costly.

They must have a great deal of insurance.

What am I forgetting?

Does that answer your question a little?

I am so grateful to live in a province in Canada in which psychiatric care is paid for by the medical system.
