Should I try to find a specialized therapist for my social anxiety? My therapist does not specialize in social anxiety (my t is my pdoc) and sometimes I feel like she doesn't understand what I'm going through. I heard that behavioral-cognitive therapy works well for social anxiety, and its something I'm interested in pursuing. Does anyone else see a cognitive behavioral herapist for their social anxiety and does it work? If not, how do you handle/deal with your social anxiety? I'd really like to know.

Angela,
I do think that a CBT therapist would be good for social anxiety. I don't have it, but I've seen it work for others. And if you can find someone who specializes, all the better. Even if it may cost a bit more, it may result in shorter, more efficient treatment. Then, if something comes up that is not specifically social anxiety-related, you can to back to your pdoc, continue with the specialist if that seems right, or find a different T.Good luck. Social anxiety is a also a more hidden problem, and people don't always understand it.

Hello Angela,
I too, have social anxiety. Twenty years ago I went to a psychotherapist who apparently did not understand the pain and loneliness that comes with it so we never dealt with it.
Two years ago, I mustered up the courage to see a CBT therapist. What a godsend! Initially, it did not go too well. I think his attitude was he would give me the steps and I would just do it. He did not see how anxiety provoking it was for me. I stopped going seeing him after six months or so because I think that he thought I was not serious about changing. Anyway, overall I thought that he was a good therapist so I went back to see him again. This time, he completely understood that I needed support in getting through this.
In addition, the Social Anxiety Institute has a series of tapes that have been a lifesaver.
It's been a long road that I have unfortunately have had to travel on my own. But....I have been able to make friends. Everyday, I ask myself what I can do to improve this situation. I seek out opportunities to meet people. A year ago, I couldn't say hello to the postman.
I also realized that there are a lot of lonely people out there who would enjoy my company.
So, CBT has helped but don't expect anyone with this training to understand SA. Not all anxiety is created equal even though some will tell you it is. Find a therapist who understands the pain and loneliness and will give you plenty of support. That is what has helped me the most.
Best of luck to you.
This is the end of the thread.
