Too many words in therapy?

Posted by Miller on November 20, 2002, at 9:55:22

My problem is that I have so much going on in my life, I don't know how to indroduce it in my sessions. For instance, we are working on my anger issues right now. So, I feel like I shouldn't bring up the fact that I haven't cried in years, I am thinking about leaving my husband, I think I may have an affair, and there are definately more issues. Each session is an hour long. I feel like we don't have enough time to finish the subjects we start as it is. A friend has told me that I need to let my shrink know about some of these issues. I don't know how to "dive in" like that. Any suggestions?

I used to beat around the bush all the time in therapy. So, when I started seeing the therapist that I currently see, I decided I was going to lay it all on out the table right away. I guess I was testing her, to see how she'd react. So, I sat down, looked her in the eye and the first full sentence I said to her was, "I'm not worried about adjusting to college, I just told my parents that, I have an eating disorder, I've been sick for a long time, and I don't know if I even want to get better." Talk about a run-on sentence! She reacted calmly and didn't make me feel like I was a nutcase or anything. It's reassuring when you can just come out with something bluntly and your therapist isn't shocked by it, and reacts in a supportive way. And you can start getting real work done. So, just go for it! Just make yourself say it. Or you could write it down and read it to your therapist, if that would help.

It really helped me to write things out, mostly to organize my thoughts- then I would hand my list to her and she would in turn help me prioritize my issues. Maybe you can try that for the next session. good luck- judy

Ditto on writing it down - I try to jot things down between appointments. To start each session I run down my list and we decide where to start, which items receive priority. This also eliminates the "Oh crap, I forgot to mention xxx" that always happens to me after I leave the office!

I also feel like this makes the most efficient use of the time that I'm in therapy. It's worth a try! I wouldn't get much done in any area of my life without my lists.
