Would this be considered incompetent?

Posted by Jackster on September 3, 2002, at 2:12:03

I realised today that I no longer trust my PDoc. He put me on Tegretol without mentioning that it interacts with the contraceptive pill. Luckily I looked it up and found that out for myself and confirmed it with the pharmacist. (In his defence he doesn't prescribe the pill to me, my
doc does).

He also didn't mention that Tegretol interacts with Xanax (which he does prescribe to me). I found out through my own research that the reason i was suddenly getting panic attacks out of the blue was because the Tegretol was reducing it's effectiveness. When i told him about this later he said yes it would. (would have been nice to know before the fact).

Finally today he saw my blood test (checking the Tegretol levels). He's concerned that my B12 levels are so low - maybe I can't absorb it? 2 mins on the internet and I found out that it is common for anti convulsants to reduce levels of B12.

I'm worried now about anything he may prescribe me. Should I change docs? I changed 2 years ago because I was at a clinic that had a different PDoc every few months. Or am I being picky?

so many shrinks think they're pharmacologists and they're not- as you discovered your pharmacist or internet are much more accurate sources of drug interactions. since he is in the 'polypharmacy' mode i would consider him incompetent and dangerous. if you are able to find a more knowledgeable shrink (i've found those connected to universities to be more current in their thinking and more aware of drug interactions), then i would certainly switch doctors. i feel bad for his patients that aren't as thorough as you and simply accept what's being handed out. take care, judy

Thanks Judy. I went to my family doc today who has referred me onto another Pdoc. She was very understanding of the situation.
