I would like to know what I can take to neutralize excessive glutamate, but without affecting dopamine or serotonin in the process. I thought of gaba or magnesium, but both seem to dampen down everything and not just the glutamate.
I was thinking maybe taurine. My doctor says high dose fish oil and/or magnesium will put a lid on the glutamate. What else? Any ideas?
Because I take a low dose zyprexa, I do not want to use an herb of any kind. Liver enzyme stuff is too unpredictable.
I had urine test for amino acids. Most were in the low normal range, but glutamate was about 300% higher than the top of the normal range. Temporarily I'm using low dose klonopin to counter it, but it also counters dopamine and serotonin and that is not good for my mood.

Those are some good ideas. There is also zinc, I believe.

taurine, magnesium, lithium, vitamin C, niacin, b12,
Indirectly, fish oil, b6, quercetin, PKC inhibitors, creatine, theanine, reduction of exposure to excitotoxins ie MSG. Growth factors like BDNF can reduce glutamate excitoxicity.
Basically anything that can reduce neuronal excitability is likely to reduce the potientally neurotoxic effects of glutamate.
Remember that glutamate can be high without neurotoxicity. ITs just when it gets too high.
How do you know if it gets too high?Not exactly sure. One symptom might be light and sound sensitivity.
