My doc wants me to increase fish oil to 5g to 6g per day. Depression and anxiety.
I'm not sure, but I think in the past whenever I tried increasing fish oil doses I got more anxiety and maybe more depressed too. Could be my imagination.
I'm just wondering what effects or side effects have other people felt at high doses? Anxiety? Anti-anxiety? Feeling down? Feeling manic? Skin problems like acne? Anything?
Thanks!

Fish oil doesnt agree with everyone........it didnt me.
I've been trying skullcap recently. It's certainly no cure all, but the effects whilst subtle clearly DO reduce the effects of anxiety a bit.
Its a wierd one as at first it made me feel a bit kinda sleepy and not really with it (but again in a subtle kinda way) but it does work, you just gotta give it time and a mild dose.
Its cheap so worth a try for you I think. Give it two bottles of caps before you pass judgement, and dont pushthe dosage.......if anything take it easy onthe dosage.

When you say high dose fish oil didn't agree with you, what happened? More anxiety? More depression? Just curious in what ways it didn't agree with you. I swear when I take higher doses my ears ring louder, I feel more anxiety, I feel more depressed, and I dormant boils come back to life.

2-4 gram of fish oil is fine. More will cause insomnia and confusion.

Yeah, more anxiety and depression. Nothing I could put my finger on, just that it seemed to worsen rather than ameliorate my symptoms.
I quite often find what I try makes me kinda worse but then backing off on it gives me the improvement. Almost like it helped but needed to dump the ugly side of the vit/herb before I got the desired effect. Having a similar kind of experience at the moment I think with skullcap, ie it seems to make me spaced out and not with it (a bitlike being trapped under ice and trying to smash ones way out) but when I back right off on the dose (I mean just one cap a day or less) after taking the recommended dose for a week or so, I seem to benefit.
Does that make any sense?

Is it possible that 3g a day could cause depressive symptoms? Could be a coincidence, but I've been feeling MORE depressed since I started taking it. But, I'm taking it to help my cholesterol, so I really can't just stop taking it...

I have been fine on upto about 3 grams of EPA and ~2 grams DHA per day.
At higher doses it may begin to behave more like a mood stabilizer. It can increase the sentitivity of the cholinergic axis, which may cause depression in some. It is also a dose dependant PKC inhibitor so it can theoretically I think it has the potential to bring you down too.
I would keep experimenting. Theres nothing wrong with takeing a cyling dose. Ie.
1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2 (# of pills) and then just loop that.

I'll have to talk to my doc about the fish oil. I know first and foremost i need to get the cholesterol down.
The depression could have nothing to do with the fish oil. It could be that I'm just really bored because I'm not taking summer classes. I tend to get depressed when my brain isn't stimulated...
which is why i just got a library card....something to do!
But i will talk to my doc and see what he thinks.
