What on earth is a 'glandular'?

Posted by Meri-Tuuli on June 3, 2006, at 7:05:04

I went to see a nutritionist yeaterday, and she mentioned 'glandulars' as a support for my (underactive and stressed) adrenals. What on earth are they???

She mentioned animal tissue. EH???????

No info in the archives, and none on wiki.

Anyone any ideas/used them??

They sound vaguely sinister.

Kind regards

Meri

Yes, animal tissue.

Dessicated glands taken from healthy but dead animals. E.g. at a slaughterhouse, they'll collect thyroid tissue. They dry the tissue to a powdery dryness, grind it, and sift out anything that didn't grind up. What's left, the powder, is called a glandular. That's what Armour thyroid supplement is, a prescription *standardized* glandular, from pig thyroid. There are standardized, and un-standardized glandulars. Adrenal glandulars used to be very popular.

The idea is "if it kept a pig healthy....".

P.S. I'm still resting.

Hi,
I took an over the counter thyroid "tissue" (just like Larry described only I am not sure if it was pig, or duck, or crow, or?) It was not Armour. It was called "Thyroid Tissue" by a company called Atrium. I had been diagnosed Hypothryroid and this tissue brought my #s back to normal and kept them there for a few years. Then I took a major dive and finally gave in to Synthroid which works GREAT for me (though I had to overcome the fear of conventional meds phobia I had). Sooo, can't tell you why it didn't last but it was good for a while.
