is ginkgo a 5-ht1a agonist ???

Posted by linkadge on December 20, 2004, at 15:03:04

I know that ginkgo supposedly increases the number of 5-ht1a receptors due to aging, but does it act as a 5-ht1a agonist as well ??

This is good to know. Ginkgo could offer a potential adjunctive in panic disorder, since it is known that panic disorder patients have fewer 5-ht1a receptors in the hippocampus, and can benefit from 5-ht1a stimulation.

Can anybody tell me if ginkgo is one of those supplements from which a person should take a break every few months?

Also, if I am taking DMAE and NADH, is taking Ginkgo overkill?

Thanks

Tamara

What's a 5-ht1a receptor, and what's the significance of this, is it something to do with serotonin, and is agonising a good thing??

Generally it is believe that of all the receptors than an SSRI hits. THe 5-ht1a receptor is what brings about the most theraputic effect.

Some herbs have constituents in them that act to activate these receptors. Ginkgo appears to be one of them.

5-ht1a activation can have anti-anxiety, and antidpersssant properties.
