Censorship

Posted by calamityjane on October 3, 2008, at 12:43:09

It is my personal opinion that there is too much of it here. This is in regards to several "blocks" i have noticed happening to others recently, as well as being "humbled" by the deputies in regards to my own slip of tongue.

Instead of embarrassing a person publicly, why not just delete their offensive post and send them a bmail warning them? It just seems to add fuel to fire. I seriously feel like I am in high school right now. And in the end, I can choose not to post here just as deputies can choose to block a person. If I choose not to post, well that is just one less person to add to (and I quote) "an already withering pbabble".

It's Dr. Bob's choice to do everything publicly. That may not suit some people, while other people find it reassuring in a way. Having posts just disappear also causes a lot of distress.

I can assure you that the deputies did not mean to humble you or make you feel bad. I've probably done the same thing at times, mentioned something on board that I learned off. I know I've experienced it on the other end too. It's hard to remember where you heard what or when. To keep it straight while trying to answer someone on board is a herculean task.

Deputy interventions are often meant as nothing other than an explanation and a reminder. I'm sorry if it made you feel like Administration was scolding you. That wasn't the intent at all. We also recognize that you didn't have an ill intent in your post.

Thanks, Dinah. That was a really clear explanation.

Everything Dinah said goes for me, too. There in nothing is any of my admin actions meant to hurt or humiliate anyone.

I think the educational aspect of doing things publicly here is important to Dr. Bob, and I agree with him on that. Even with so many requests to civil, sensitive or follow other site guidelines available for anyone to read here, still there are questions from posters who express frustration at not understanding the rules. If the site were administrated behind the scenes, there would be much less - *no* opportunity, really - for anyone to see deputy or Dr. Bob's actions and have a public debate about what things were done, interpretation, etc.

As far as accidental disclosures, I do understand. I've decided long ago to say nothing anyone has told me about themselves in a post unless I have literally found *their* post where they wrote that exact thing I'm going to mention. If I can't find one, I won't say it, or if feel it's important to discuss publicly, privately ask them if I can. As Dinah said, it's impossible for any mere human to keep information straight, otherwise. Fortunately for me, I didn't learn this personally, but more from listening to and watching others more knowledgeable than me about message boards, chat boards and such.

CJ, I am sorry if you felt/feel badly. -- 10der

Thanks for the notes -

Still, part of me understands and part of me doesnt. the beauty of this site is that we are all anonymous - if we want to be. I would never say something privately to someone here and expect them to keep my secret. They don't know me from Adam - I could be anybody. I think people ought to simply be careful with what they share, and then mixups like these wont happen.

wiht that said - I do understand the "law" around here and respect that completely. I do. I will be more careful in the future - thats for sure.

thanks -
cjane
