ECT

Posted by tensor on August 20, 2023, at 10:54:45

I have recently started ECT for my TRD, had two unilateral sessions so far. This is my first time receiving ECT and not sure what to expect. I have been sleeping more than usual, last night I slept almost fourteen hours, that's long, even for me.
I have been slightly more anxious also.
What are your experiences with ECT, how many sessions before improvement was seen (if any)?

I haven't had ECT, but I can recommend an excellent book about it by Martha Manning -- Undercurrents : a therapist's reckoning with her own depression.

Good luck.

Hi, Tensor.

I had 8 unilateral treatments. I felt a mild improvement at treatment #5 that lasted less than a day. 10-15 were bilateral. I am not going to tell you what to expect. Some people consider it a miracle. Others, like me, did not respond, but was left in an altered state for three weeks. When driving along local roads that I could have driven blind-folded for over a decade, the roads were completely unfamiliar to me. I felt very weird.

That was 1991. ECT has advanced quite a bit. Different placements on the skull of the stimulators and different current parameters are being used in modern ECT. I hope you have better luck than me. Memory side effects are reduced.

I recommend a new brain tissue stimulator treatment that uses a magnetic application that penetrates. I provided a Google search link. It is called SAINT - Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy.
