Hi everyone,
My doc just added 10mg Ritalin to my cocktail. But I'm also taking a medium-high dose of ativan which I've been taking for years, mostly for sleep, with a small amount in the afternoon for anxiety.
Does this make sense to take both a stimulant and a benzo or do they cancel each other out? I take the Ritalin first thing in the AM, and almost all of the ativan at bedtime.
My doc just kind of shrugged her shoulders when I asked...

the upper and downer combo was once known as a 'goof ball,' and its been effective for -some- people with -some- forms of depression, sometimes. reassuring, i know. :-(
on the plus side, ritalin is milder than amphetamines, and it used to be the go to drug for quick and easy mood lifts in depression. also on the plus side...
its far, far easier to stop a stimulant than a benzodiazepine. true story. oh, and fun fact: you know what can really help when you get down and grouchy, tapering off an Rx upper? answer: a benzodiazepine.
lol. psychiatry...is...not exactly scientific, clearly. :-)

i've taken adderall with ativan....like the adderall was helping with focus and stimulation, but i noticed when i took ativan i would be more loosened up, there was the stimulant effect but the benzo eased up some of stimulation. Alot of the older ads, from the 1950s and 60s they used to have cocktails of stimulant and barbiturate, "ease up social anxiety" they were mainly antidepressant drugs, the barbiturate and stimulant meds.
a benzo with stimulant eases up tension, and loosens u up, its mainly good for anxiety caused by stimulant
