I have been on clonazepam 2 mgs for 2-3 years. After multiple med trials for sleep with my older doc, my new Dr. wants me off. I had to move to a new town. That's why new Doc. I have tried for 4-5 weeks. Went from 2 and [1/4(as needed)] at night to 1 and 1/2. Headaches for first week and 1/2. Then ache was better, but I feel different and uncomfortable in my head and don't sleep. I need it for sleep. I didn't sleep for years off and on through, I think, all the sleep meds available. It is my last resort. I also use it for a mood stabilizer for BP II. My other Doc. of 25 years believed in poly pharmacy and was 'not' benzo-phobic. I don't want to get real sick like I was for years. I feel a like I'm destablizing trying to come off. I am angry that I have to feel bad again after many years of use, good quality of life and 'no' tolerance.
How can I convince him that I can use it safely and it was my last resort and what 'does' he have to help me sleep? My driving is now difficult too. Thanks.

Seriously find a doc who isn't benzophobia. Also now medicaire pays for benzos. And all insurances comes 2014 will be based on medicaire and what it pays. If the meds work for you why change them? If it "ain't broke that why try to fix it" as my old pdoc used to say. Good luck Phillipa

I agree. But the interim Dr. who I see once more before I move, said 'she' would want me off benzos what ever the mental cost to me.
I just called a pdoc in my new town whose secretary said that he does prescribe benzos. I hope he will in my case since I have had no problem with drug abuse.
Thx.

As long as you don't abuse them and stay on a low dose and they work why are they any different from any other med? Just less metabolic issues. Good luck Phillipa

If I can only convince the doc of this. We'll see. Thank you, Phillipa.

gadchick,
I've been on 2mgs for sleep for about 2 and 1/2 years. I have not gotten tolerant to it, so I don't think I'm addicted. I just have had insomnia for about 20 years. I tried to come down on the dose from 2 and 1/4 tabs to 1 and 1/2 tabs over the course of about 5 weeks, and I found out later this was too fast. I had bad insomnia, of course, and felt weird and uncomfortable in my head. The headaches stopped after about a week and 1/2. I never felt relief from the withdrawal symptoms, so I went back on it and it took about a week to work again at 2mgs. I hope the new Dr. I see when I move will let me stay on it.
I don't know how I could ever come off it without having severe insomnia again after all the tapering is done since I don't sleep well anyway. Thanks for asking how I am.Lois
