Med for slowing down CNS from stimulants to sleep?

Posted by Novelagent on February 7, 2013, at 14:42:44

I'm on Dexedrine 10mg 3x/day, but to get the job done for my science courses or to crank out a paper, I sometimes could use a higher dose-- I once had a doc prescribe me 20mg 3x/day, still within the daily dose guidelines, and that worked really well.

Only thing is, I can't sleep if I take doses higher than what seems to be 30mg-- I currently take 10mg at 7 AM and 20mg at 11AM and none afterwards. Even when I take maybe 30mg at 11AM, it keeps me up all night, even though I use trazodone and melatonin.

I'm sure Seroquel would do the trick, but I'm already on monthly injections of Invega Sustenna 156mg. I can't recall if Ambien fights off stimulant-induced insomnia. If I have to get a reading or paper done that requires extra focus, I take 4mg of Klonopin at bedtime with 50mg of trazodone.

Please don't judge, I'm mostly experimenting so I can work with my doc to adjust my meds and take them as prescribed.
I'm switching soon to a clinic at a hospital with docs that have one who published a journal article on the need for sone adults to take higher doses of stimulants.

The question is, how do I get to sleep with the doses that have efficacy for me? Anyone gave any experiences? Thanks!

I think remember reading in a newspaper article about kids with ADHD and one of the additional meds one kid took was an alpha blocker? Was it clonodine? In his case, it wasn't for hyperactivity, it was to help him sleep from the stimulant. It was clonidine or some other alpha blocker. Anyone know if it works?

i've been on dexedrine at 60mgs in some of my past stimulant prescibing stages....klonopin is vary good for undoing the electrical activity, you may want to look into a fast acting nueroleptic. But your already on Invega...that's a difficult situation. mmmmm....

clonodine...i've been on clonodine...last year...it sedates you...not like klonopin but anyting past .3mg will start to cause hypotension and relexes the blood vessels making pressure lower. The only that is b eee acch is the dry mouth side effect, ughhhh i hated it i had drink water while i was talking to people because it would go dry and couldnt pronounce words.

Intuniv is similar to clonodine....its not as strong....but it does have mild sedative effects. It may help with sleep, both that and clonodine....but for a high dose stimulant insomnnia...you may have to go up to .4-.6mg of clonodine, with seroquel....but the only thing klonopin could interact with it....so that's kinda complicated.

There is a medication that called Compazine which is a micro version of thorazine....it is vary short in duration 4-6 hours. And that is really SHORT for a antipsycotic. It's not really used mainly it's label, but it would defintly get the excess dopamine in the cortex out. I just don't know if it would interfere with invega, or if your doctor would prescibe it.

Beta blockers are another option for lowering the NE from dexamphetamine.

Used to give clonidine infrequently for heroin withdrawal. Other than this wasn't used where I worked at the time Phillipa

yea....but i was put on clonodine during anxiety periods.....it lowers the blood pressure and calms some forms of anxiety....but it doenst effect GABA.

It's used for treatment for ADHD with along side with a stimulat. It by itself is not vary effective alone for ADD and concentration...actually it makes it worse...but it has a calming effect and thats why its sometimes used in ADHD, hyperactive forms.

Clonodine caused me to feel sluggish and sleepy....its the hypotension, usally this didnt happen until the dose was above .3mg....

yea.....
