Was curious why is it that some bipolars with the ups and downs severe can take wellbutrin and no other meds. I always thought either a mood stabalizer or atypical was needed. Or both. Thanks Phillipa

That is definitely what the party line in psychiatry is. But I'm not sure they know what they are talking about half the time.
Wellbutrin by itself made me very hypo manic. It was great for about a week until the lack of sleep caught up with me. I was super overstimulated, all my muscles were tense and couldn't be untensed, I was losing weight by the handful, and not sleeping more than 2 hours a night. I had a million zany ideas and I was positive they were genius. Every movie I saw was the best movie I'd ever seen. It was great, but not sustainable.

I couldn't handle it either. Reason for the question is this lady lives near here is bipolar classic with highs really high and lows to suicidal and all she's taking is wellbutrin she says. I'd think she'd need a mood stabalizer and antipsychotic. Well she's off as just bought home here first called police on a neighbor as their dog was barking big deal, then yesterday told her next door neighbor her husband had left her put a for sale sign on newly bought house. Next minute they both drive in in a new car together. The lady that told the story of the husband leaving her stood there with her mouth hanging open. Can't imagine what will happen next. Phillipa

Wellbutrin has no effect on serotonergic activity in the brain-excess seratonin plays a role in destabilizing the mood of bipolar persons.
A mood stabilizer iss a must for treating bipolar disorder, however an atypical isn't always needed.

Eric exactly what I was taught. Hence this lady neighbor isn't following her docs instructions. No wonder she's been manic and now locked in house and won't venture out. Classic old term manic depression. Thanks Phillipa

I think the percentage of bipolars that have bad reactions to SSRI's might be higher than those who react badly to andrenergic, dopaminergic drugs (except where anxiety is an issue)
Wellbutrin can make you hyperaroused, which is similar to hypomania in some ways. I get anxious, irritable and jumpy, but dont have issues with busy thoughts. some ssri's push me into mixed states.
