Worried about my Mom's abscess

Posted by Deneb on July 27, 2011, at 19:22:39

Sorry, I don't this don't entirely belong here, but this board gets the most traffic and I'm worried about my Mom.

My Mom had 2 big abscesses in her gums for over 4 months before she sought treatment for them. They made a pimple in her gums so I guess it was pretty bad.

She went to what I think is a sketchy dentist. He charged only $800 for 2 root canals and one extraction, in an effort to get rid of the abscesses. Isn't that a bit cheap?

Anyways, their office is unreal, it is full of really outdated equipment and the dentist himself must be in his 70's or something. Going in the office is like stepping back in time.

Anyways, after the root canals and extraction, her big abscess still did not go away. One did go away though.

She went to see the same dentist and he prescribed some antibiotic. After taking all the antibiotic, the abscess still did not get better. Then after a few weeks she went to the same dentist again and now he said he had wanted to wait 3 months to see if the abscess healed and if not he would have to cut the gums and scrape the bone.

Mom didn't want to wait and suffer for 3 more months so she opted to get the bone scraping next week.

Oh yeah, this dentist charges next to nothing for procedures. He doesn't charge for just the examination. And he isn't charging at all for this bone scraping because he said she already paid $800 for the root canals and extraction.

I just don't trust him entirely. Also he had given my mom a small filling before and it was the mercury type fillings. Aren't those obsolete?

I just don't really trust him. Isn't this bone scraping surgery? Shouldn't an oral surgeon do it? Is a regular dentist qualified?

My Mom won't be knocked out for it either, she will get the freezing though, but I'm worried she will still experience pain. When they freeze your gums, only the soft tissues are frozen right? Is bone frozen too?

I'm just really worried and Mom is too cheap to see a regular expensive dentist.

Should I be worried?

Might be worth going to the drug store and buying her the following

A multivitamin (Centrum or the store brand)

Some Zinc 50mg tablets

Some Vitamin C 500mg tablets

Take one of each once a day with food, they can help speed the healing process quite significantly.

Deneb -

Abscesses in the mouth are dangerous, because if they are in certain places, they can go straight to the brain. Thank goodness your mom is getting them taken care of.

As for the quality of her treatment.. you could research it online and maybe get an idea of whether what this dentist is doing is typical. The dental school idea is also superb. There, she will get the latest and greatest treatment, which will be done under the supervision of the best in the field (low-level doctors aren`t hired to be teachers - schools only hire the best).
