Deep Brain Stimulation for Depression

Posted by Meltingpot on November 2, 2010, at 15:40:30

Hi,

It's Denise here from the UK, I remembered what my old user id and password was.

I know I shouldn't really be discussing this as the dbs treatment is still being trialled for depression in the UK but I have managed to speak to two of the people on the trial and they both seem to have had miraculous results from it. Neither of them responded after the first year but then seemed to respond a bit later when another site was stimulated. It's really encouraging.

I have pretty much exhausted all of the ADs over the past 9 years and although they do help me to function. I go to work etc. I fell constantly flat and tired. Just like I'm going through the motions. I can't have ECT as I'm told I'm not indicated for it but I'd really like to somehow get on this trial.

Anyway, I just thought I would mention this as it might give some people some hope.

Denise

Hi there!

I really want to get DBS done. I really think it's answer to depression that does not respond to meds. I tried to get in some trials a few years ago, but I didn't make the cut. Now it is been done here and my pdoc is looking into it for me.

Do you have any idea what these targets were? As far as I know there are only a few different targets currently being explored: the cingulate gyrus, nucleus accumbens, internal capsule, or less likely, the lateral habenula. I suppose there will be more targets but I think these are currently the main ones.
