That's really interesting Link. I knew that Lamictal was only effective for while, but not Lithium. I wonder if that is always the case. Some people stay on Lithium for years and it's the way they can control their mania.

I don't know if the study said "how" patients lapsed. I think that a lapse into depression would be more common with lithium.

I thought that Lithium helped depression as well. For some reason when I think of vathium I think of those people who have type 1 bipolar (I know that others use it) and that it's the only med they can use. They have more instance of being manic than depressed. But I know they do eventually get VERY depressed. But for some reason I thought that an anti-depressant would do more hard than good. I realise that I writing in general terms and outside the scope of the article, but I am curious because I know that you know a lot about meds and that you would be able to set me straight in my state of confusion regarding bipolar 1 treatment.

Well, I think you are right. For pure bipolar I disorder, mood stabilizer monotherapy is supposed to be best.

That being said, lithium and valproate are stronger anti-manic agents than antidepressants, although lithium does seem to prevent suicide.

Either way, bipolar patients statistically spend most of their time in depression. Also, lithium seems to work better on certain forms of bipolar (namely euphoric bipolar).

Long term lithium (for me) was a real downer. It exerted some antidepressant effect immediately, but this did not last more than a few weeks.
