Still hoping for reply Wellbutrin Parnate washout

Posted by kirbyw on October 22, 2010, at 23:25:19

Still wondering if anyone has any info on this. Actually I am now 5 days Wellbutrin free

I was off of Parnate for 3-4 months and in the past 3 weeks I had been hit hard by depression that seemed very disproportionate to real life events. Its very difficult. So I went to a P-Doc here in Costa Rica (10 days ago now) who recommended Wellbutrin, partially due to my own ill advised insistence that i would like to try something other than Parnate, due some undesirable side effects of Parnate ( low blood pressure, sexual side effects, etc) So he recommended Wellbutrin. I had just 5 days on Wellbutrin when I realized last Monday (five days ago) that this is a more severe depression and that before it gets worse I need to get back on Parnate, side effects or not. So how long do I need before starting Parnate again? The P-doc had said something about 7 days, but then acknowledged that he has no knowledge of MAOis but I think have actually seen references to people who have used wellbutrin WITH Parnate simultaneously. But haven't been able to find them. I did get a one sentence e-mail from Ivan Goldberg a New York depression specialist saying that 6 days would be sufficient. But I was unable to speak to him on the phone.

So input is welcome, if there is someone who can help knowledgably. Parnate can have some impact on me even in just two or three days, and I want to start ASAP, not wait the recommended 14 days. I may start tomorrow which will be six days. Its been a really bad week.

Rick in Costa Rica.

Hi.

I would just like to contribute that Parnate and Wellbutrin are sometimes used together. I tried the combination myself and experienced nothing untoward. "Officially", you are supposed to wait two weeks between drugs.

If Dr G said it's ok, and SLS did the two together, then there is your answer.

I would only offer the caution to begin low and don't rush things the first week. This is not a safety caution, but more of a stabilization caution. These are all powerful chemicals and you don't want to rock the boat too much when making changes in a short period of time.

As for the side effects, most longterm maoi users over the years here have reported that the bulk of the side effects become minimal or sometimes nonexistent over the long term. Usually in the neighborhood of 6 to 9 months, but sometimes as early as 3 months.
