My script for Deplin came back as Duleek-DP?

Posted by lunksmoo on October 14, 2010, at 12:54:34

This morning my doc wrote me an Rx for Deplin. I dropped it off at the pharmacy, and just checked online to see if it is ready or not. When I checked it, the pharmacy filled it out for Duleek-DP instead of Deplin. My doc said there wasn't a generic form. Should I complain to the pharmacy when I go to pick it up? This is a nationally known pharmacy, not a local store.

Goggle lists it as a brand name? I sure didn't know that. Phillipa

You might as well ask the pharmacy to double check the prescription. Deplin is Deplin. Although Duleek-DP and Deplin are both L-methylfolate preparations, I don't know what the differences are. However, Deplin is indicated as an adjunct drug to standard antidepressants to treat depression. Duleek-DP is not.

Duleek is not an officially approved generic alternative to Deplin, although I expect that the pharmacy thought it was. The pharmacy will probably swap the tablets for you if you ask.

Here is a letter from the manufacturer of Deplin....

I went in to pick up my prescription, and told them about this. They said they hadn't heard about this, and refilled my prescription with Deplin. They were very helpful, and were glad to know the information. Also, the Duleek-DP wasn't that much less expensive than the Deplin. Even though this isn't an actual generic equivalent, why get the generic if it isn't a substantial savings?

Oh well that's good. I expect they thought Duleek was exactly the same, when infact it's not. I thought it would work out OK.
