Can a doctor legally prescribe buprenorphine for depression "off label", or would they be breaking laws to do so?

I think a doctor has to be licensed to use buprenorphine in a substance-abuse treatment setting, but I think they're free to Rx it "off-label" for pain and emotional problems.

I don't know about canada, but in the US it can be legally prescribed off-label, by basically any doctor. only its use in opioid addiction treatment is regulated by the SAMSHA, i.e. a doctor has to have the so-called 'weaver' in order to do buprenorphine maintenance.
