I finally got government approval for Adderall XR! Yay!
The Dexedrine is okay, but I was starting to abuse it which is so not cool. Taking more than I should have. I never do that with Adderall but it is once a day dosing.
It's probably one of the reason I was so tired this week. I never thought I would abuse it, but there you go, I did. I am feeling so crappy that I thought another dexedrine would help. It didn't. Anyhow, I am going to bring the rest of my Dex to the pharmacy for them to get rid of and get the adderall.

Thank Phillipa! I am off to pick it up now. The Dexedrine was bad news in terms of abusing it. I have never abused a prescribed med before! I least I realised that I was abusing it before it was too late to stop.

I think Adderall will help you depression. What it does is increases dopamine levels and makes .. things more intresting and it helps ALOT with studying and reading and especially writing papers. Too bad stimulants are not for me anymore. Dex is less....adderall gives a energy kick to the body because it has levoamphetamine which works on more breathing and blood flow, but it also releases noradrenaline which will improve attention. Dex ... only lasts 3 hours, and yes I used to take it everytime I got depressed and it worked, but the abuse got so sky high. I would go places and look like I was on drugs [well, i was, lol] I rerember I had to wear sunglasses when I went places because the light made my eyes hurt because the amphetamine would dialate my pupils. Let me tell ya, it was alot of work when I was taking dexedrine but ... it did give a feeling of wellbeing and I'm glad that it's [excuse me addearll] being prescibed to you. The one thing about amphetamines is they increase the mood and activity levels, but when they where off ... i rerember being this "emotional straightjacket" and everything made me cry and get very ... alot of pain unless I drank high amounts of alcohol, or xanax. Or took another one because it depletes dopamine levels from the brain when over-used.
But be aware it does ware you out sometimes, so be ready for it. But im so glad for maxime!! this should be some help
BEST luck to you, and prayer that this will work.Matt

Thanks Matt! I have been on Adderall XR before and it does help. It doesn't make feel speedy the way Dexedrine does. I just feel normal. And I find it wears off gently (I guess because it is XR) snd I don't slump into exhaustion and depression the way the Dex was doing to me. Not cool. I was always crying so hard at night because I felt so depressed when the dex wore off.
The thing with stimulants, is that they do help depression in that can get you going instead of staying in bed all day. But I find they mask the depression. It's like I can feel the depression hovering very closely underneath the Adderral ... if that makes sense.
I will take my first dosage of the Adderall tomorrow morning!

>I think, unless you were motivated to feel euphoria, that higher dosing above what you're prescribed is a desperate (unwise, of course) move largely brought on by unrealistic expectations for what the medicine is suppose to do.
Adderall is easier to notice when it's in your system-- it has more nervous-like feelings, in your peripheral nervous system. Dexedrine, you basically only notice it when you are bothering to do work.
It will not make you do work that bores you. If you take too much, like any stimulant, you will hyper-focus on boring things and feel awful.
I advise re-considering what you expect from your meds are they suppose to let you shave off an hour of sleep? Help you spring out of bed and take a shower? Clean? Read boring subjects that you wouldn't otherwise read? Let you do work in an environment you typically find yourself using to procrastinate (rather, than say, the library?)
None of these things are suggestive of realistic expectations of any stimulant. And if they are things you expect from your meds, you are doing damage to your whole lifestyle, mentally and physically. It means you need to understand life is challenging, and pills do not make it any easier. If you feel you can't do things like cleaning without them, that's not ADD. That's either dependence or a manifestation of poor mood and requires a lot of behavioral interventions through _therapy_.
thankfully, you are wise enough to recognize this somewhat and stop it. be proud of that.
but as a general tip:in college, a friend told me this:
"The trick to adderall is to *start* the reading/paper *before* it kicks in."
; )

Thanks for your post, you bring up some excellent points.
For me, the Dexedrine was making me really nervous and anxious and hyper. Until it wore off with a BIG crash.
Adderall on the other hand does not affect me that way. I just feel more alert and able to get tasks done. Right now my depression is bad and I have trouble focusing etc. I just started a new job two weeks ago. This will help my depression very soon. I am at the point that really no med will help my depression. My depression right now is situational and I don't find that more of an AD or changing AD helps me.
Don't get me wrong, I don't expect it to get rid of my depression. Even with the Adderall I can feel it poking to the surface. It's there.
If I don't improve in the next 6 weeks my pdoc and I have decided we will try something else. We don't know what though. I have been on so many med combination that don't work. Right now I am on Parnate.
This is the end of the thread.
