In the documentation, virtually all tricyclics are said to be contraindicated with MAOIs. In practice, however, how true is this, since there is great variation in the amount of serotonin reuptake among tricyclics? Or is serotonin not the issue here? I know clomipramine acts a lot on serotonin, while desipramine acts very little on serotonin. Could desipramine, therefore, be used safely with an MAOI?

I think those combos have been used safely, more so in the past (like the 60s and 70s), not so much these days. I read somewhere that using certain TCAs with MAOIs actually reduces the risks of some MAOI side effects.
