I am suffering from pretty bad depression right now and social anxiety that was never really in remission (the kind where I can't walk alone in a bar and strike up a conversation with a stranger). Doc mentioned Emsam, but I've heard it can make anxiety worse in some people. Should I insist on Parnate or are the drugs (both MAOIs) similar enough that if I go on 9mg emsam I am getting a similar effect as Parnate?

I think both meds cause anxiety in a lot of folks who have posted on here. Phillipa

For some people anxiety worsens on Parnate and for others it doesn't. I have a lot of anxiety (social and general) and the Parnate has helped a lot.
What about Nardil if the Parnate makes you too jumpy?

I"ve used both and I have a lot of anxiety, and my sense is that it's hard to predict how people will react to each of these drugs.
I had a bad reaction to parnate, and an excellent response to emsam-- so they really are quite different. If my dose gets too high, I do have heightened anxiety, but at a therapeutic dose, I don't.
Sometimes it interferes with sleep, but I"ve always had insomnia, so I can't say that it's any worse on emsam.
I'd try emsam, since there are fewer restrictions. If you don't do well, then you can try parnate--unless you have reasons for trying it the other way. Whichever you do, I don't think there's any clear way of knowing how you'll respond beforehand.
