Anticholinergic Effects

Posted by Bob on May 21, 2010, at 20:08:29

Can one reasonably expect to adapt to the anticholinergic effects of a drug over time?

I'm thinking about trying Amitripyline and was wondering if the anticholinergic effect ever become more tolerable. Are these side effects dose dependent at all?

TCA SEs can diminish over time - most people here who were able to tolerate them initially reported that the SEs did diminish, although not disappear completely. The only SE I get from amitriptyline (apart from extreme sleepiness) is dry mouth, and it did gradually get better.

But everyone will have a unique reaction to amitriptyline. I'm lucky (I guess) that I can tolerate medium-to-high doses like 200-300 mg. Some people can't tolerate 25mg and find the SEs to be unbearable. But if you have insomnia and can tolerate the anticholinergic effects it's worth a shot. It's certainly helping me.
