Rage/Anger re: stimulants...

Posted by SheilaC on February 9, 2010, at 17:32:58

I noticed that if I skip a day or 2 of taking my ADHD meds (stimulant) that I am extremely irritable and full of anger / rage. I feel like I can't control it.

Then when I take the stimulant again I am fine.

Is this a withdrawl effect or an addiction? A bipolar response?

The stimulant helps with my ADHD, but I am terrified of missing a dose.

I would try to remember to take your medication then! Sounds like it could be withdrawal. Does this always happen if / when you miss a dose? How angry / irritable are you?

It seems like the withdrawal effect. But tendencies towards bipolar may be making you more susceptible to the withdrawal. (in my opinion) Stims are bad for bipolars. Are you on a stabilizer?

Usally stimulants help with behavior and when their discontinued for a while it brings a rebound effect of eihter depression/rage because there is not stimulation going on in the brain in certain areas

This couldn't possibly be good for us, could it?

I've heard "rebound effect" before, but it just sounds bizarre. How healthy is this for my body?

I have some Depakote I am trying out and it does help with my mood. I've been afraid of taking it because of possible weight gain. But, I can take a pretty low dose - 250mg - 500mg.

Maybe the depakote combined with the stimulant will curb the irritation and maybe even headache associated with the stimulant.

When I cut back on my zyprexa dose and was taking wellbutrin sr, I got angry too. wellbutrin is a stim and zyprexa a sedative. It went away when I went back on the full dose of zyprexa.
