I have been taking Pristiq now for a few weeks (this is the 2nd time I have tried it) and it upsets my stomach something awful. It's embarrassing, I have terrible gas and bouts of constipation/diarrhea. I had some similar issues with Cymbalta.
I plan to stop Pristiq because I just can't deal with this any longer.
Here's the thing. I take Seroquel at night to help me sleep. Usually the Seroquel makes me really bitchy the next day. But since I have been taking Pristiq, I don't get the next day bitchies with my Seroquel.
I don't do well with a lot of serotonin, which is why I have tried both Cymbalta and Pristiq.
Are there other meds similar to Pristiq that I could combine with my Seroquel. Something not heavy in serotonin?

Remeron, Wellbutrin ... there are others that are not SSRIs. Just can't remember them at the moment. I couldn't tolerate SSRIs at first, so my Pdoc focused more on norepinephirne and dopamine. Just look up SNRIs

Ultram (Tramadol) is a non-narcotic pain killer, but it has a small amount of Serotonin.

Sheila, I might be totally off here, but my doc mentioned strattera. (I preface this w/ an I don't really understand these things), but strattera is classified as a NARI. Try wikipedia and see what comes up.
Best--and boy, I know this is taking some trial and error for you--speedy relief soon,

Old TCAs like desipramine are fairly specific to norepinephrine. They do hit a bunch of other receptors like acetylcholine, histamine, etc. but near zero on serotonin.

Hi Sheila,
There are lots of meds that are not SSRIs. It is prudent to differentiate between these and serotonergic meds at large. Keping this in mind, some examples of chemicals which raise serotonin but aren't SSRIs include:
Moclobemide (Reversible MAO-A inhibtor)
Nardil (Irreversible MAOI)
Parnate ('')
Buspirone (5-HT1A receptor partial agonist)
Tianeptine (accelerator/enhancer of 5-HT uptake)
Lu AA21004 (5-HT3 receptor antagonist, 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist, and 5-HT enhancer.Dose dependantly increases acetylcholine, dopamine, norepinephrine and 5-HT. See neorotransmitter.net for more details)
Trazodone (5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptors antagonist. It increases 5-HT in the brain, though its metabolite, 1-m-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP), acts as a 5-HT1A agonist decreasing 5-HT release.)
Nefazodone (potent antagonist at the 5-HT2 receptors)
Mirtazapine (5-HT2A/5-HT2C/5-HT3 receptor antagonist)
This is the end of the thread.
