How dangerous is Serzone

Posted by chowdha on September 10, 2009, at 19:04:57

29 year old male with probable ssri anorgasma every time had sex was on a ssri not able to finish. Antidepressants that do not cause sex side effects = trazodone, Remeron, serzone. I currently do not have a partner so i do not know . Doctor prescribed trazodone 300mg @ 8p. Does not seem to work well. Wellbutrin not an option for me(agitaton). I am over weight reluctant to take Remeron (WEIGHT gainer) Doc will not prescribe serzone as per possible liver damage. I am thinking about seeing an other doc to ask for serzone? How dangerous is this stuff Any opinions? thanx

Serzone was taken off the market in Canada because liver damage can occur. I don't know if you will find another doctor to prescribe it.

I happen to have just investigated the risk of liver failure due to nefazodone, arising from a debate elsewhere. The risk is real, but very rare. In relative terms, the risk of liver failure is about the same as from using acetaminophen/paracetamol (Tylenol), both about 5 cases per million users per year. The background rate is 1.8 unexplained cases of liver failure per million people per year.

The FDA decided that nefazodone could remain on the market despite the rare but serious risk of liver failure. Canada withdrew it from the market. I think Canada's argument for that was flawed, as they stated that other agents could offer similar benefits without the risk, despite the fact that some people receive benefits from Serzone that have not been demonstrated with other agents.

If you find a doctor who will prescribe it for you, you should ensure that you receive a series of liver function tests to monitor your condition. You should also familiarize yourself with signs and symptoms of liver disease. If you discontinue the drug in time, the symptoms are nearly always reversible.

I would agree with the above statements... because of the black box warnings, the company who made Serzone went fleeing, it has remained generic here but with warnings.

That being said... if you are of reasonable health (liver-wise, etc) and it is something that works for you it is still a viable medication if it is available in your country.

However you should have fairly routine blood draws (3 months even) if you do take it. Its prudent I think.

yeah agreed, the risks are WAY overblown. This drug got a bad rap, its not great but its a lot better than alot of the crap out there. It is not a robust AD but really good for quality sleep and stopping the triggering of panic attacks in my experience * the best of any drug I have taken for panic) Anyway , I took it for 10 yrs and got liver screening once a yr and no eleveated enzymes ever.

yeah i sort of wish people understood relative risk of things beyond 'risk' or 'not a risk'. we have numbers that go beyond our fingers now, people

Is it desirable to have baseline measurements of liver enzymes prior to starting nefazodone?

I agree with Larry that the view that antidepressants are interchangeable is flawed. We know that from experience. In addition, for each new antidepressant that comes to market, there will be a percentage of formerly treatment-resistant patients that will respond to it.
