What the doc said...

Posted by SheilaC on August 18, 2009, at 9:09:59

Saw doc finally this morning. Told her I failed Pristiq (severe constipation and total numbness), but it did seem to help my mood. She thinks I can't handle norepinephrine. I asked about Effexor, but she said it would probably be the same.

She thought that my problem with serotonin is the build up in my body (which is when I start having the bladder spasms, etc.), she suggested a long acting SSRI.

She gave me 10mg of Prozac, said to take it until I start to have bladder side effects, then to back off of it until I find the right doseage for me. Maybe it will be every other day, every 2nd or 3rd day. Since Prozac stays in the body up to 7 days I have a little more control.

We'll see if that works.

I would have thought a shorter acting SSRI, but since my body is slow, what other people process faster, it takes me a little longer to get rid of the drug.

So, my current mix will be:

5mg Abilify
10mg Prozac
1mg Klonopin

She said I could drop the Seroquel since I was taking Abilify. I asked if the Abilify would be enough to keep me from getting too crazy, and she said yes it would be fine.

Maybe this will work because I will have more control over the dose and won't have any withdrawl if I miss a few days.

What do you think? Also, should I take the Abilify at night and the Prozac in the AM? Didn't know if the higher dose of Abilify will make me sleepy.

Sheila sounds like a good plan as the prozac doesn't need to be taken daily. I'd take it in am as for me was very stimulating the abilify know nothing about. Good luck. Love Phillipa

Hi Sheila,

First, best wishes on your new cocktail. Have you taken abilify before (sorry, I forget). I found my 2.5 mg dose a bit stimulating--less so as it went up (finally to 10). So, I took mine in the a.m.

What, may I ask is your Dx? I think abilify is potent. Hope it works for you!

Hi FB, my dx is BPII. Mostly I suffer from depression and irritability. I have trouble taking SSRIs due to the fact that the serotonin drugs make my bladder spasm, retain urine, freuqency, just weird stuff. Plus SSRIs make my hyper.

I like Abilify, but am having a lot of trouble with bloating. I am very uncomfortable and my whole body has swelled up. My clothes are tight and don't fit well.

Not sure what to do. I like Abilify but can't take the extreme swelling.

Also - I liked the Pristiq, but couldn't deal with the severe constipation.

Ugh!

Hi Sheila,

I wouldn't like the bloating either--and that feeling of clothes just not fitting properly! I didn't have that symptom at the 2.5 dose--I don't know if that's an option for you, a lower dose.... Or a way to deal with the bloat. Finding a med with workable side-effects is tough going.

I've been away for a bit, only glancing at the board. Have you added a replacement for pristiq? I'll look at the threads for a post from you.
