stomach discomfort: suspect dexedrine. Experience?

Posted by floatingbridge on June 19, 2009, at 19:23:42

Hi All

I've been on Dexedrine spansules and quick release for about 3.5 months (a total of 40-45 mg per day). It helps immensely for the ever mysterious fatigue, ADD and SP (the only thing so far to touch the SP). In general, I tend toward stomach aches and feeling like my chest is being crushed from tension (anxiety). Hard to breath, etc.

This feels a bit different, like permanent dyspepsia.

I loathe to give up the Dexedrine--it kept me out of a precipitous slide this spring--and the SP relief is wonderful--a new life! But I feel the time has come to discuss this with my pdoc (on Monday).

Any thoughts or experiences?

I switched from Dexedrine to Provigil (with no help from the Provigil) and then to the adderall XR which continues to help me with alertness, focus, and function..... I hope you are able to find something that works!!!!!! You are always so supportive of me!

Hi Candace, I wish I had some experience w/Dexedrine to help. It sounds like it could be any part of the mix you're on, or maybe just heartburn? Does it feel different from heartburn? For awhile I had heartburn that had a strange abdomen pain with it. At first I didn't connect the two, but when the heartburn resolved, the stomach pain did too. I hope you can get answers soon!!! ~Amelia

Amelia, No, not at all like heartburn. Lower in the gut. Not quite nausea but a second cousin?

Thanks!

Candace

Thanks Fm. pdoc has mentioned Provigil in the past, but doesn't think it particularly pro-social. And for some reason he nixed adderall. Why did you switch from Dex to adderall?

(Oh, just thinking about switching meds creates anxiety!)

Cant remember why I switched as it was 8 years ago- lol.... But, could the pristiq be causing stomach problems? I know effexor bothered my stomach when I used to take it.... Just a thought... I have a friend who takes pristiq and she says she HAS to eat with it or she feels sick like when she was pregnant (and she definitely isn't)but if she takes it with a meal she is okay....

You've been taking it for a while and this just started? Could it be something medical? I know I tend to blame my head for physical problems just a thought. Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,

well, at first I thought it was a continuation or breakthrough of my anxiety symptoms. Now my thought is it's the meds--and I've heard that dex can cause a kind of anorexia--though I'm not sure feeling ill is the same as not wanting to eat--I've never been anorexic, so I don't know, unless one counts during episodes of major depression, which I don't, really.)

Oh boy....I hadn't considered your idea....

Hi Candace I've been anorexic. It really doesn't hurt like that--more just normal hunger pangs. So if you were skipping meals like anorexics and felt that way, then I'd think it was b/c of lack of food. Are you eating OK?

Amelia,

Thanks for your input. I am not eating as well--I find soup the best these days. Maybe I am not eating enough.... Seems my appetite is messed up, and that's never been a problem before.

Since I'm older than you guys by a lot after second child amphetamines were still okay for diet pills. I was already thin but at the time wanted to be thinner and my ob-gyn gave me a months worth. I washed all the windows in my house inside and out daily. But thankfully took every other day as toward the end of prescription couldn't sleep. Totally wired me and less appetite. Phillipa

Thanks for your responses in helping me sort this out. I think I'll try and adjust diet (eat more regularly, small meals) and discuss with pdoc. Maybe I need to take this with food--something that simple.

Glad you're here!

Candace
