Why isn't Topamax working for weight loss?

Posted by Enigma on April 7, 2009, at 16:35:12

A year or two ago, I gained 45 pounds on zyprexa, and thus quit it due to the awful weight gain, around 40 pounds.
Then I was prescribed 200 mg? of Topamax to take the weight off. It worked like a charm. I completely forget how long it took to start working, but I'd have to say, 2-3 weeks, and the weight FLEW off.

I was just recently prescribed Seroquel, and gained even more weight. So I quit taking it a while ago. I gained back everything I lost and then even more. So, naturally, I asked my doc for Topamax again. I've been taking 200mg for just about 4 weeks now, and I haven't lost a single pound, haven't felt my appetite diminish, nothing. It's been like a sugar pill.

I believe I took topamax with the same drugs too (Nardil), besides the above.

Can someone tell me what's wrong this time and why tomapax isn't working?
I can't carry this basketball around anymore, not to mention how it makes me feel. I hide my gut at all costs. Being a thin guy all my life, this weight is VERY hard to deal with. I'm DISGUSTED by how I look. Working out, when I can, and dieting seem to have no effect on my weight, either.
Help!

When I first started on Topamax for tremors, I lost some weight. It was due to everything tasted awful - sort of metallic like. As the years passed, the dosages were increased to control the tremors. In turn, my antidepressants were increased too. Well, I got off the stuff, because I became cognitively slowed. I couldn't remember simple words. Here comes the kicker. I got my first kidney stone. Let me tell you that I don't eat trash and I exercise. I watch my intake of fluids. I currently have a stent in place. This drug absolutely should not be used for weight loss. It is a seizure medication and should be prescribed ONLY by those familiar with the drug. This drug has some powerful side effects. If I knew that I would get this kidney stone, I would have NEVER gotten on this medication. I refuse to take it now. It's simply not worth the risk.

My kidney stone had so much pus around it that it couldn't be removed. If it were, the infection might go systemic and I would be in ICU right now.

My hope is that pdocs will rethink ever giving this drug for weight loss. My neurologist started me off on less than 50 mg and worked up to 200 mg per day. I never could tolerate the effects of dizziness and that numb tingling sensation in my limbs after exercise.

Lastly, there is pdoc on youtube that states no physician other than a neurologist should EVER prescribe this medication. He has seen people being put on ventilators and die from this drug being prescribed for weight loss purposes. I believe him.

While someone may not readily see the effects right now from it, this drug will turn on you. It can effect other organs. I cannot stress how serious this drug should be taken. It's NOT a weight loss med. It does have that as a side effect, but it is doing other things in the process of making you loose weight.

I would have to agree that Topomax should be carefully watched with blood tests if one is going to be using it for purely weight loss.

As noted it has some risk of injury to internal organs.

Weight loss on APs, as I am facing, really is trying to curb appetite, and doing some modest exercise as one is able to do. The key is keeping the calories down as the metabolism sinks, and this is hard, I am struggling with it myself.

For reasons with my disorder going in strange directions I can't use the gym right now, its too hard to explain, but it would have been nice. I used to quite a lot.

Basically, subtracting a bit for the metabolism slowdown, if you take in less calories than your maintenance calories (the amount needed to live), you will start to lose weight, slowly.
