international diagnosis

Posted by X_ander on January 11, 2009, at 2:15:50

hi everyone, does anyone know whether if you go to another country, (U.S for instance) and get a different diagnosis over there, and come back to Australia..if the diagnosis still holds?

And therefore if the medications prescribed overseas will be likely continued...?

Thanks, X.

You will be re-diognosed... just like if you were to change doctors the new doctor would want to make sure you were diagnosed correctly or he would be the one scrutinised for anything that goes wrong due to missdiagnosis.

I don't know about Australia, but if you should run into some serious trouble say on a European vacation (hopefully you have taken out some traveller's insurance of some sort) and are prescribed medication of whatever sort, you are allowed a 90 day supply of importation of said medication into the US, provided it isn't on the Schedule I list. As for other controlled substances, I don't know exactly how customs handles it. For the US, I would get a confirmed letter from the doctor in country X, just to be sure.

Let's say you were to go to the US and have amphetamine prescribed for ADHD or treatment resistant depression.

It would help your chances (by how much?) of getting such a diagnosis here and therefore the prescription.

My psych is sceptical of diagnoses, drugs and the industry, but said to me once that some people just do better on amphetamine, and in such cases he has helped them get a diagnosis for ADHD.
