Hallucinations on Trileptal...Will This Go Away??

Posted by BGB on April 3, 2008, at 23:00:47

I started taking Trileptal on Tuesday. I am taking 300mg in the morning and at bedtime. I am also tapering off of Depakote ER. I started at 1,500mg and am down to 1,000mg now.

This morning at work, I started hallucinating visually. I had double/quadruple/or more vision and I saw things moving when they were actually still. I also had uncontrollable eye movements. I had to have a co-worker drive me home.

My hallucinations subsided about 5-6 hours after they started. Should I keep taking the 300mg, and wait for the visual disturbances to go away? It's the weekend so I could take Friday-Sunday off. I read that the double-vision was a side effect but I don't know if it's going to go away or not. And will it suddenly come back, just like it came on? If so, I'm screwed because I drive to and from work, and would prefer not to kill myself or anybody else.

Thanks to everyone for your advice!

sorry i posted above too. but i did have the eye movement thing on Triliptal. i had it in the beginning as a side effect, lasted about a week. but it did gradually get better. ALSO, it would happen if i would forgot a dose or something. so i had to watch for that.

HOWEVER, i would make sure and tell your pdoc asap so that he/she is aware of it. and to what degree you are having it. also with the hallucinations it could be a different effect you are experiencing and he/she may want to take you off it?

and i also had a very severe reaction when i first started Trileptal, i was very lucky that i was in the hospital when they switched me to this drug. so just as a precaution please let you pdoc know asap and keep an eye out for any signs of low blood pressure or signs of ataxic behavior.

(i dont' mean to scare cuz this can be a good med for many people)
Best Wishes
b2c.

Lamictal has something similar with blurred double vision and minor visual weirdness like a stationary object looks like its twitching or vibrating. It went away after the first month or so but yeah its definetly disorientating.
