I try to take xanax sparingly so I don't get addicted. Just having one .50mg pill in my pocket helps. I try not to take more than 1.5mg a week. Going with the 12 hour half life I try to wait until it is totally out of my system before the next round. I would appreciate your thoughts on this matter

I also take xanax for many years so I am definitely addicted. I take it daily though at 1.75mg. To answer your question, if you don't take it daily there is little chance of addiction and keeping the dose small as you are, is an excellent way to go. If I were you, I would never take it say, daily for two weeks; dependence has been known to happen that quickly! Keep on what you are and you should be fine. (I am not a doctor of course) :)

Bud welcome to babble meds board see you're new. Many excellent people here to answer you questions. My experience with xanax was a positive one till it did no longer work and made me tired instead. Now on valium and it seems to work better for me. I was prescribed xanax every 4-6 hours continuously. If you don't need it great. It is the shortest acting bezo to my knowledge and I believe there is a chart on this board that give equivalency doses and half lives. Good luck. Phillipa

I was wondering if anyone else has the same concerns and taking the same actions I do. I e-mailed Dr. Shipko and he was kind to e-mail me back saying not to take xanax more than twice the same week to avoid addiction issues. Thanks to those that have responded.

I take Xanax occasionally, breaking a 0.5mg tab in half most of the time. I have taken a whole tab when I am so upset I need to go to sleep. It seems to work only when I really need it and not when I'm just a little stressed. I rarely take it more than a couple times a week, if that, so no problems with addiction. Plus, I'm not usually a physically addictive type of person- much more mentally addictive.
