Went to a doctor 2 months ago because I hated my job. He diagnos me parinoid and put me on 2mg Risperdal. Feeling I was mis-diognost and no longer trust this doctor, I'm trying to get off the Risperdal. For 9 days it was no problem but on the 10th day all heck broke lose. I had extreme anxioty and panic and VERY depressed. I cut myself off cold turkey but still haveing problems 3 weeks later. How long will this last? Will I ever feel normal again? Please, I need help.

I'd like to welcome you too. Although I have no personal experience myself with resperidol. One question I know you feel you were misdiagnosed and that's okay but did the med help and are things worse going off it? If so forgetting diagnoses as they are not the important thing if it helped why not try taking a dose again and see if you feel better. Also does the pdoc know you are going off it. A call to him might be reassuring to you. Phillipa

Thank you all very much for the welcome. When I was on the Risperdal I felt like I normally do (it wasn't really doing anything) until some nasty side affects started happening. I started feeling like (duh) more than normal. Then I started getting abdominal pains, stuffy nose and congested all the time. I'm not seeing this doctor anymore. I'm now taking Lexapro and Lorazepam from my family doctor and its the only way I'm getting by. He believes I should be ok after a bit. That Risperdal must be some very powerful med. I do think I'm slowly coming back to myself but its taking a good while. I was only on it for 2 months.

Doctors hand out antipsychotics like candy these days. They are powerful meds and can cause serious withdrawals, especially when stopped cold turkey instead of slow weaning. The good news is there is light at the end of the tunnel. Sounds like your family doc is on a better track than the other one.
This will take time though. I think it would be setting oneself up for grief if one were to expect to see real improvements tomorrow or next week. Realistically they will probably occur slowly, gradually, in a subtle fashion that is almost undetectable from day to day, but after a few weeks or a couple months you realize the trauma is behind you and things are looking a lot better than they were back then.
If you ever need to stop a medication in the future, please visit the Withdrawal board here to ask how to do it slowly in small steps. Doing a slow wean removes a good deal of the trauma you have experienced.

I take Risperdal as needed. I've been on as much as 1 1/2 mg a day. When I go off it, I don't notice any particular withdrawal other than a renewal of the symptoms I had when I started. Perhaps a slight tearfulness.
I'm on it for occasionally severe anxiety.
That's just my experience, and not necessarily representative.
This is the end of the thread.
