Salt disturbs sleep

"Method: 20 volunteer students were chosen for the study. They had no problem sleeping before the study. They recorded the time of sleep and when they went to bed for five nights before salt eating, In the 6th day they took 0.5 gram of salt per 10 kilos of body weight at 8.00 PM at night We did record time of sleep, times of awakening at night, presence of any disturbances,depth of sleep, duration of fulfilling sleep. amount and times of drinking water at night, their general condition after sleep, effect on REM and NON-REM presence of nightmares. All these parameter about night sleep were studied.

Results: Salt delays time to go to bed, during sleep the individual awakens several times, Sleep disturbance is about 2–3 hours. The normal pattern is disrupted and deep sleep is decreased and it is superficial at best.REM and NON-REM cycles are influenced. NON-REM decreases and REM increases so that the individual dreams a lot and even sometimes has nightmares. The day after, they are not satisfied with the sleep. Subjects awaken earlier and during the night repeatedly got up to drink water. The day after they felt drowsy and fatigued."

Before I lost my sense of taste use to eat salted crackers in bed and it didn't affect it anymore than usual. What about potassium levels as they regulate the heart along with salt? Phillipa

But you are taking valium and Luvox, both of which induce sleep.

For people with adrenal fatigue one of the things recommended to do is take lots of salt prior to the time of day where the adrenals are their weakest, and to boost salt intake overall. Somehow helps adrenal function. If that is true, then maybe the enhanced adrenal activity would tend to lighten sleep?

They didn't specify if the salt was iodized or not. Iodine has effects on thyroid function.

Urine PH should be neutral to slightly alkaline at a first thing in the morning test with PH test strips. Mine is acidic. To boost PH it is recommended to take baking soda or apple cider vinegar. The ACV goes in acidic, but metabolizes to very alkaline. Both serve to make the body more salty basically. I tried them. I discovered I felt lousy the next morning. Very tired, fatigued, more depressed, just not well. Kind of like what the people in this study experienced with salt.

Proof that even simple things like salt can have a profound effect on how we feel. Now go imagine things like st johns wort, zyprexa, lexapro, lithium, etc etc. I mean, if salt exerts that much power, just imagine the power of other things.

Okay, regardless of the scientific methods of this "experiment", 40 grams of salt and a chaser (a stout 80 kilo student) is approaching LD50, as in, get thee to a hospital. That's 20 times the RDA and about 10 times what people ingest normally.
