Sometimes when I take my meds, I get really bad heartburn after taking them. It feels like they are stuck in my throat. Then I get waves of pain in my esophogus and my mouth fills with saliva that is very painful to swallow.
Is this heartburn? I've never had anything like it before. I don't know what to do to prevent it.

Try some Gaviscon over the counter. It works wonders for heartburn. Better than anything else IMHO over the counter as an antacid. This is for immediate relief. You might want to look into a proton pump inhibitor taken daily in the mornings. They decrease stomach acid, and if you have reflux, will take away any discomfort from regurgitation.

Do you take them on an empty stomache? If so, try taking them just BEFORE food. And then wash your food down with tea (normal tea) which is a great digestive aid. Something to do with tannins (I think). But dont take your mineral supplements same time as you drink tea as they wont get absorbed properly.

If your multi contains poorly absorbable minerals anyway then drinking tea wont matter as these type of minerals are poorly absorbed anyway. But tea will still effect the mineral absorption from your breakfast food.
However, if they are highly absorbale forms (chelates, gluconates, citrates, etc) then its best to take them without tea.Personally, I like drinking tea with breakfast so I take a sustained-release high strength mult-vit (without minerals) at breakfast & then take a highly absorbable multi-min + other individual mins with dinner & without tea.
Ideally you should drink tea away from meals when you can. And an alternative drink to aid digestion is mint tea (not containing REAL tea) which wont effect mineral absorption.
Still, drinking tea with breakfast IMO is ok as long as its only with breakfast & not with the remaining meals of the day and not with your mineral supplements.
And coffee is supposed to effect mineral absorption in a similar way as tea.

Breakfast is the one meal I do eat and I have been taking my meds after breakfast. Tomorrow I am going to take it with my food. I had heartburn REALLY badly today. Ouch!
Thanks for responses.

> MaximeYes, take it with a LITTLE water (just enough to swollow the pills) just BEFORE you eat. In many people drinking fluids (apart from digestive aids like tea) with a meal can actually make excess acid worse because you're diluting the acid which is trying to digest the food so your stomache simply produces more acid to compensate. And actually adding an acid supplement like betain hydrochloride to a meal often works just as well as an antacid.
Let us know if it helps.
