I am part BP II, and mostly deal with racing thoughts and irritability.
after all the anticonvulsants and antipsychotics, and 50 lbs heavier, i am trying Neurontin.
If I take it during the day, it makes me very depressed. But my large dose at night 1500mgs makes me feel good, and helps with sleep.
Any clues?
Regards,
Brian

Hi Brian,
Both my pdoc and my neurologist are constantly making adjustments to the way I take Neurontin every day. The latest regiment was implemented to deal with the kinds of experiences you're having.I take 2400mg/day as follows:
300mg AM
600mg Noon
1500mg PMAs you can see the nighttime does has been heavily loaded whereas the morning and noon doses are much lighter. Also the noon does is slightly higher than the morning dose.
However this is not a recommendation; it is only how I take it and is just one example of how the doses can be adjusted.
I take it for a combination of Migraine prevention and mood stabilization so I don't use it for exactly the same reasons you do. The onset of Migraines are the principal determinant of how I take the med.
As always you should discuss any changes with your pdoc. Don't change the amount of the med or the way you take it on your own unless you have the pdoc's explicit permission to do so.
Best wishes,
Reggie BoStar

>Glad to hear that I'm not the only one. I too am taking 1500mgs at night to help sleep etc. I have been trying to take 300 in the am and noon, but has been causing the bad depression.
Wonder if 100mgs for the first 2 doses would work. That would be tough though, seeing as my pills are 600mgs. could split the 600 in to 300, then pill cut it to 150mgs.
Unfortunately i don't see doc for 2 more months, as it's impossible to get an appointment in Phoenix.
Regards,
Brian

>No, in a word.
More than about 600mg in a sitting and you're just peeing out gabapentin (which is a relief because you can't really overdose). It's usually taken up to 600mg 4 times a day (which I do). Trivia, the generic Greenstone is actually I believe still made by the originator. 1500mg at a sitting is a bit of a header on the kidneys, that sounds like a rather odd concoction. But you're seeing a neurologist. Maybe he has some just journal article I haven't seen, it sounds strange still.

I used to take 1600mg at night before bed to help with my restless legs syndrome and bruxism. It used to work, mostly. Then it pooped out... I'm off of it entirely now and I'm on 0.5-1mg of Clonazepam before bed for restless legs and bruxism. It was what I was on over 5 years ago that worked then. It works brilliantly now, and no poop out as far as I can tell.
Also I seem to sweat less. I think all that Neurontin was coming out of my pores mid-morning because I'd have a hot flash (I'm male and 37) mid-morning and I'd sweat profusely. It doesn't happen anymore.
