Yesterday I ran out of Risperdal and didn't have time to refill my prescription. I thought it would be OK to skip one night's dose. I didn't take my 0.75 mg Risperdal last night and I couldn't sleep! Insomnia is rare for me at home in my own bed.
Then I got my prescription this morning and took my dose late. But then I got soooo sleepy at my tutoring session I could barely keep my eyes open and definitely didn't learn a thing. I was so tired I called in sick for work and had to sleep for a few hours.
So does Risperdal make you sleepy? Or is this just a coincidence? Does this mean I need it to sleep? Am I hooked on it?

Sleepy, and slow. Dose-dependent of course.

Most things, especially things taken to sleep, will have a rebound syndrome of some sort -- antipsychotics are no different. I'm not really in favor of the whole terminology of addiction, like "hooked", but, sure, if you wanted to stop taking it, for instance, it's a great idea to titrate down. Cold turkey is a horrible way to stop taking most drugs.

I take risperdal also, and yes it does make you sleepy. For me it is a little bit milder than other calming medications, but it def. puts one to sleep. I took it a long time ago and don't recall any withdrawl symptoms, but maybe it is addictive.

160mg of Geodon made me sleepy, but that is true at any dose. VERY Lethargic. Could barely function. Risperdal made me sleepy at higher dosages (4mg). The tired feeling went away with continued use (6 months). Currently taking seroquel (50mg) Great for relaxation. Makes you less tired at higher dosages. Can't speak for zyprexa and abilify.
GoodLuck : )

What dosage are you taking?
I was on a low dosage and it didn't affect me at all. All it did was make me puff up (edema) and make me lactate so I had to go off it.

I'm taking 0.75 mg. I've been taking this for over a year. I think maybe it only makes me sleepy right after I take it.
I'll just skip my dose next time I forget so I won't fall asleep during the day.

I took risperdal off and on for about a year and never had any problems getting off it. Infact I was glad to come off it. Then I took zyprexa. Still taking that, problems getting off it. I don't think risperdal made me sleepy, I took it 2 times durring the day, at the time I didn't sleep much at all.
