Could Provigil help anxiety?

Posted by Jimmyboy on September 17, 2007, at 15:07:04

Just wondering if Provigil or Adrafinil has actually *helped* someone's anxiety or panic as opposed to making it worse?

Also are the benefits of provigil lost if you take a benzo along with it?

Thanks

JB

Provigil can definitely help anticipatory anxiety as it keeps me aware of the living moment only. Apart from that I don't think it has any anxiolytic effects.

Yes. Most of Provigil's good effects are lost once you pop a benzo with it.

That is interesting that you say that. I was going to answer the post quite differently. Maybe the key word there is "most"?

Here is my experience:

We have a particulary difficult to control stallion on our farm, and I don't usually handle him.... he overpowers me, and he just generally terrifies me.... I have lots of anxiety when I have to work with him. I have been injured by him in the past.

bla, bla, bla, change of circumstances here, I have become his primary handler. In order to deal with the stress, I take .5mg of Xanax 30 minutes beforehand.... for one thing, it really helps if he cannot sense my nervousness.

Conclusion: I have not noticed a loss of the good Provigil focus and concentration. I think clearly and calmly with this combo in a very stressful situation, whereas the Xanax alone would probably put me in more danger.

Just another perspective.

Perhaps I am getting some kind of placebo effect?

The best to all,

Janet

Why do you lose the benefits if you use a benzo too? Phillipa

I mean most of the good effects of Provigil goes away once you pop a benzo with it. (good effects of provigil = excellent alerting effect)

ie. Provigil is alerting while Benzos are sedating. Benzos like Xanax and Ativan are strong enough to cancel out Provigil's alerting effect. (My experience)

If you want to enjoy the magnificent alerting, mood elevating properties of Provigil, just use it alone. If you are in need of an anxiolytic, use Neurontin. Both these meds together is a BINGO.

Thanks I always wonder why something activating and sedating don't cancel each other out in this case sounds like it does. Phillipa
