Lexapro Insomnia

Posted by Jeff81 on July 16, 2007, at 12:03:57

Hi,

I started Lexapro 10 mg yesterday. I was up all night. I probably slept 1-2 hours total. I took the pill at 1:30pm. I always struggle with insomnia but it felt worse last night. Did anyone else experience this with Lexapro? Did it go away? Do you think it might get better if I take the pill in the morning?

Besides sleep problems I would like to hear people’s experiences with Lexapro in general and when they first started it. Thanks for your help and support guys!!!

Your Med Friend,
Jeff

I am thinking of trying this med for a second go round once my thyroid is figured out . I wonder is 5mg to start would help? And do you take a benzo or a sleep med that could help. Love Phillipa

I've had insomnia since way before I started on any antidepressant, so I can't tell whether Lexapro made a difference.

But my experience with Lexapro was negative (don't let that discourage you--I've heard a lot of positive experiences as well.)

At the time I took Lexapro, I had been on Celexa for a year. I was getting "samples" of Celexa from my doctor, so when Lexapro came out, he stopped getting samples of Celexa and only got samples of Lexapro. So he told me Lexapro was a "better version of Celexa" and switched me.

Celexa had been a godsend for me--it absolutely got rid of every bit of depression and social anxiety I had. But when I tried Lexapro, within 5 days, it brought back my depression like a monster. I took it for a few more days, until it was clear it was not doing anything positive.

Then I went back to Celexa and it didn't work anymore. That was the worst thing ever happened to me, because no antidepressant ever worked like Celexa again. So my experience with Lexapro was awful. But then again, I have read mostly positive experiences, and every person is different, so I'd definitely give it a try and see if it works for you. In your case, you probably have nothing to lose.

Best of luck

Yes I definitely had this problem. In fact, when I started on Lexapro it initially made me very anxious and jittery. I had to drop down to 2.5 mg a day and slowly work my way up to 20.

Don't let the initial side effects of Lexapro scare you. Mine all eventually went away - including the sexual problems - but it took some time.

I've gone on Lexapro twice and the side effects are worst at the start. My pdoc always encourged me to find the time that works best for me -- some folks get sleepier and some get more wired. Sounds like going earlier might the right thing for you now. Then as your body gets used to it, you may be able to pull it later.
I really like Lexapro. I'd done well on Zoloft, but I couldn't handle the sexual side-effects. At the beginning, Lexapro was bad like that, but within a month or so those side effects went away.

Good luck.

Yes, I got insomnia from Lexapro when I first started using it. It was so bad I went back to the doc and asked for something to help me sleep. He recommended I take Benadryl. That has the same ingredient as most sleeping aids. After a while I didn't need it any longer. Hope things work out for you.
