Nardil and Asthma

Posted by perci01 on May 29, 2007, at 15:11:19

I'm wondering if anyone has received a prescription for nardil in spite of taking asthma medications, such as salbutamol.

I've tried effexor, welbutrin, and almost all of the ssri's (except luvox) for the treatment of social anxiety. From reading personal accounts on the web, it seems like nardil is the next best choice for SAD.

Are there certain asthma meds that are safe with nardil? Is it more likely that the psychiatrist is going to have me try some tricyclics first, even though I've read that they are not as effective?

If anyone could give me some advice, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Apparently it can be okay according to my pharmacist, but one has to watch out for things like increased heart rate or increased bp. I take Advair and albuteral plus another medication for bronchitis. I was reluctant to take Nardil, and so my pdoc prescribed Parnate instead. Apparently there is less risk with Parnate. I don't know why, but Parnate does not help with anxiety. Actually, it is usually activating.

I have taken both Nardil and Emsam long-term with asthma. The main concern was the albuterol inhaler, but neither my doctor nor pharmacist had any real concerns. I never had a problem, and I use the albuterol heavily.

Probably not. They tend to not be at all effective for SAD.

Very helpful, thank you all. It's good to know that the asthma meds are not necessarily a bar to a prescription for nardil and that the likelihood of a first run with tricyclics is slim. I've already wasted a lot time on the other useless meds.

Actually nortryptyline worked great for me even though when I was younger it did not. MAOI's worked when I was younger. But I had an allergic reaction to nortryptyline and associated med's and so I am back on Parnate. It is sort of working I think, but I have not been on it long. In the past it took several weeks to work well, and I have only been on it for one and one-half weeks.
